Bangalore : The Indian arm of the $2.7 billion Silicon Graphics Systems, has entered into a strategic alliance with the Chennai-based Pentamedia Group to set up three interactive reality entertainment centres in the Mayajal complex of the latter near Chennai. Speaking to media persons in Banagalore, SGI chairman and CEO Robert Bishop and SGI (India) managing director Prasad V Medury said SGI would also provide computer based crash analysis to Telco.The company has also bagged a contract from Kanpur IIT to supply third generation systems for its computer science centre. Mr Prasad said the three deals put together would be in the range of Rs 15 to Rs 20 crore. The crash analysis of SGI is used by the 17 leading automobile makers in the world, Mr Bishop said. On the impact of US slowdown on SGI's growth plan, Mr Bishop said it was too early to make any assessment. "But SGI is not planning to issue any warning in terms of profit or financial performance in the immediate future", Mr Bishop said. SGI's focus will be on high performance computing, visuals, storage and networking." "We are going to be in the business of broadband involving large volumes of data" Mr Bishop said.
On setting up a own software facility in India Mr Bishop said this was not in the agenda of the company at present. "We would like to concentrate on our core areas, he added." The core areas of SGI activity will be manufacturing, telecom, media and science. The four areas would cover a broad spectrum including basic research, molecular modelling, drug discovery, genome project, oil exploration, education, weather forecasting. The company also operates in the market related to defence and intelligence. In manufacturing, SGI (India) has relationships with Telco, Mahindra & Mahindra, Punjab Tractors and Escorts, while the department of tourism uses SGI servers. PentaMedia Graphics, Eenadu TV and Ramuji film studio also uses the high-end systems of SGI. The Indian Institute of Science, IITs, ONGC and CSIR research labs are the other major clients of SGI in the country.
