German designs, Indian finishes

BELLA JAISINGHANI
Indoors, the furniture store that most Mumbai residents are familiar with, has signed a deal with a German firm, Wimex, to sell international quality products in India. Indoors' new range of European modern furniture was displayed at an exhibition in Mumbai from February 15-17.

There were elegant bedroom designs imported from Germany, apart from locally-made bureaux, nest tables and occasional designer furniture in various hues. Indoors' own creations are the very German-sounding Schreiber, Georgina, Sassenburg and Linea.

The company says these pieces have been designed using superior quality German material at its modernised factory at Khopoli. And while the quality is taken care of, the cost-effectiveness of the line is sought to be played up, too. But affordability is a relative term, and the furniture sets cost between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

Indoors director Mr Asim Nagree justifies the cost saying that each piece is "a fine blend of form and fusion and highlights the best of European crafting, styling and precision". He says that the furniture is waterproof, and fire and scratch resistant, thanks to its use of medium density fibre and particle board.

As in most furniture shops, customers visiting Indoors can pick the products that are available or place orders to suit their requirement. The company's showrooms display `space-saving' furniture designed in modern or period style. Indoors offers foldaway beds, desks, chairs, dining tables, even bars and wall units that can be interchanged. With its Wimex tie-up, the company says it is pioneering the concept of modular furniture in India.

Established as Nagree & Co in 1935, Indoors got off with a single showroom and workshop. Its skilled carpenters and the use of imported upholstery apparently went down well with its clientele. The company grew from its humble beginnings to set up another showroom and a partially mechanised factory in 1978. Of course, now, the production set-up is totally mechanised and is geared to handle major assignments apart from a full-fledged business in interior decoration.

With Wimex, Indoors claims to have brought Germany to Mumbai. It has now set its sights on the markets in Pune, Cochin, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
