Shades of Spain

SHIKHA CHADHA
Spain seems to be the flavour of the month, be it at the recently concluded technology fair at Pragati Maidan, or a showroom dedicated to interiors, in the Capital. Interiors Espania, situated in Sector 18 Gurgaon, not only prides itself on being India's biggest furniture showroom, spread over 22,000 sq ft, with 12 functional bedrooms, children's rooms, a floor dedicated to office furniture, and another exclusively to lights, but also offers world-class interiors made from natural veneered wood (finest bark in Spain).

Interiors Espania, is run by Coinma India, which is an Indo-Spanish joint venture between the $9 billion Mondragon Corporacion Co-operative of Spain and Bhayana Group of India. Coinma was set up with the initial investment of $1 million.

Once you enter the showroom you are hit by an amazing range of furniture of all kinds. It is a welcome change for the Delhiite for whom uptil now furniture meant a walk down Panchkuian road in central Delhi. Sofas are available in 25 sizes and approximately 800 fabric patterns, with prices starting from Rs 17,000 onwards per seat.

The master bedrooms are available in Classic and Contemporary ranges priced at Rs 45,000 to Rs 1.50 lakh. Kids needn't be disappointed as parents can now try out junior or kids bedrooms starting from Rs 30,000 upwards. A model bedroom generally consists of a bed, wardrobe, open shelves, study tables, etc. The fabrics are available in sporty colours and have strawberries, Winnie-the-Pooh, and other cartoon characters printed on them.

Dining tables are priced at Rs 44,000 onwards, and dining chairs Rs 8,000 upwards.

CEOs and directors can pick from eight ranges of office chairs, priced between Rs 5,000 and 55,000. Conference tables come with a seating choice of 4 to 12 persons, and are priced at Rs 40,000 to Rs 1 lakh. There are three ranges of workstations with seating arrangements for 2 to 6 employees, priced at Rs 25,000 per seat. For storing office files, one can choose from manual and electronic filing cabinets, priced at Rs 15,000 upwards.

Lights come in varied combinations of wood and metal. These can be in the form of suspensions, wall hangings, floor lights, etc, priced between Rs 37,000 to Rs 45,000.

Talking about the joint venture, Coinma's director Nitin Bhayana says: "The Modragon group wanted to make a foray into the Indian market and we were looking to diversify our range. So, Interiors Espania was formed, and we are trying to market exclusive furniture for exclusive clientele." The Bhayana group signed deals with six Mondragon companies, dealing with different types of furniture for homes, offices, boutiques, etc."

"We have the advantage of being the first joint venture in furniture market, so we plan to capitalise on this fact and have formulated a national plan for spreading to different cities by 2002," Mr Bhayana says.
