Panel to study Rakesh Mohan recommendations

New Delhi, Feb 27: The Railways has set up a committee to examine theinterim executive summary submitted by the Rakesh Mohan Committee on railwayrestructuring. In an informal get-together with the press on Tuesday,Railway minister Mamata Banerjee said that though it was not obligatory onthe part of the Railways to accept the proposals of the expert group,Railway Board chairman Ashok Kumar had earlier set up the committee,comprising executive directors from the board, to look into therecommendations. This committee has been constituted a day after the summarywas officially submitted to the minister on February 17. Justifying settingup of another committee on resource mobilisation for the Railways, under thechairmanship of Mr Sam Pitroda, Ms Banerjee said: "I am impressed by thework he had done in the telecom sector. This committee has been asked tosubmit plans to mobilise resources for the Railways and also suggestmeasures for modernising and developing the Railways." With only Rs 3,000crore being earmarked for safety purpose in the Railway budget, she saidthat it was best she could do within a plan size of Rs 11,090 crore. Theminister pointed out that the Khanna Committee on Railway safety hadsuggested Rs 15,000 crore investment over a period of five years. She hopedthat the Prime Minister would consider her demand for increasing the supportfor safety purpose. The Railways would be buying anti-collision device and the technology forthe same from the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL). The minister saidthat though the technology was available with Ircon International and someforeign companies, the Railways would buy from KRCL, as part of their effortto support the corporation financially.
