No nexus between GTB and AP govt -- Gelli

Hyderabad, Feb 27: Well before the merger between Global Trust Bank and UTIBank is formalised, the new entity is in for a controversy, thanks to thereports appearing in a section of the press and the Web-based media. At ahurriedly-convened press conference here on Tuesday, immediately after theissue rocked the state Assembly, GTB chairman Ramesh Gelli strongly refutedreports referring to the alleged nexus between Global Trust Bank and theAndhra Pradesh government. Mr Gelli further clarified that the reports werenot based on facts. "No element of truth in that", he said. "GTB has notbeen declared by the Andhra Pradesh government as `Government Bank', norconferred any preferred status", Mr Gelli claimed and further said, that thebank has not provided any overdraft to the government nor vouched againstoverdraft payments. He denied the reports that the bank had extended anadvance to the Telugu Desam Party for election purposes. Mr Gelli alsodenied that, in his personal capacity has not obtained any land in Hi-techcity from the Andhra Pradesh government. Earlier the reports have createdruckus in the state assembly, when the Opposition Congress raised the issue.Moving the debate on the adjournment motion, Congress leader YS RajashekharReddy demanded a CBI probe into the whole affair. The reports have also said, that the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu hasamassed wealth to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore and also delved into thedetails of land properties. Replying to the adjournment motion, Mr Naidustoutly refuted the charges leveled against him, However, he explained thatthe government had decided to take the services of another bank forcollecting commercial taxes in addition to the existing State Bank ofHyderabad.
