Laurel Technologies to set up Rs 20-crore software development centre in Chennai

Chennai : Laurel Technologies Ltd, part of Laurel Corportion, USA is setting up a software development centre in Chennai with an initial investment of Rs 20 crore. It plans to employ at least 150 professionals and aims to commence operations by April or May, said Mr Suresh Narayanan, vice president of the company in a meeting with press persons.

"The development centre will focus on the wireless technologies and solutions. Laurel Corporation will outsource work to the Indian arm. Laurel Technologies would actively pursue opportunities with other clients both domestic and overseas", he added. Laurel has been set up by a group of non-resident Indians.

Laurel Technologies Ltd has also set up a software training division which will focus on wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, WAP etc. It plans to set up at least 25 training centres across the country in a year.About 15 of the proposed centre would be on a franchise basis where Laurel would get 25 per cent of the revenues. The rest would be the company-owned centres and located at metros and other important cities.

In a bid to position itself in the highly competitive software education business, Laurel will focus on cutting edge technologies such as wireless. It will also market its programmes to college students, said Mr Narayanan. The company also proposes to target corporates for their training needs.
