Chennai Petro unveils novel bitumen
The Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) has launched crumb rubber modified bitumen for laying high quality and cost effective roads. CPCL, which claimed that it was the first refinery in the country to produce modified bitumen, would produce about 80 tonne of the new product per day at its Manali plant here. Crumb rubber, used as the modifier and manufactured from discarded tyres, was supplied by Tinna Overseas Ltd, New Delhi, which produces it in the country, in a tie-up with US-based Gilsonite. Though the price of the modified bitumen was higher compared to the conventional bitumen, its use would increase the life of roads by two times, the release said. CPCL claimed that the Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, and Highways Research Station, Chennai, had confirmed the addition of modifier with bitumen increases its life.
