Nokia, one of the world leaders in mobile communication, felicitated the national winners of Nokia Arts Awards in the Capital's last week. The five national winners include Simrin Mehra and Punam Sharma from Delhi, S Ganesh from Chennai, Kamal Patel from Navsari, and Sujit Burman from Calcutta. The Nokia award money is worth Rs 40,000. The five winners are to represent India in Asia Pacific Regional Competition to be held in Korea next year, where they will compete with contestants from 13 different countries. Simrin, third year student of Delhi College of Arts, could not believe that her painting would be one of the top five. She says, "I was literally stunned when I came to know about it. I was amazed since I was competing against those who are doing master's degree in art." Based on the theme `Playground of Your Imagination', students all over India within the age group of 17 to 25 took part in the event. 84 entries from among the 500 were selected. Distinguished art personalities like Mr Keshav Malik, Mr Subrata Kundu and Ms Anupam Sud were the judges.
Talking about Nokia's role in the event, Mr Sanjeev Sharma, managing director, Nokia Mobile Phones, says: "Nokia believes in business and technology. We want to contribute to the society. Since students are our future generation, this is the best mode to encourage them."
But why sponsor an art event only? He explains: "We value innovation, creativity and such communication can be best expressed through fine arts.
Art is a universal language as it transcends all barriers of geography, culture and religion."
Refuting that it's only a publicity stunt, Mr Sharma says: "Gaining publicity was not our motive. No where did we publicise our product.
Nevertheless, if it gains popularity, we don't mind. Moreover, prestigious competitions also have a face or a name value. Oscar is known because of this. Similarly, we would want our name to be known to ensure more participation."
In fact, it was only last year that Nokia ventured into such an event. Overwhelmed by the response, the mobile major decided to continue the event further. It was inspired particularly by the fact that last year one of the selected contestant bagged the fourth prize at the Asia Pacific round.
