Tata Engineering plans to launch micro-car `Zing'

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
New Delhi, Aug 13: Buoyed by the success of its small car Indica, Tata Engineering is now exploring the feasibility of driving down its micro car `Zing' on the Indian roads.

"Zing is among the several concepts that we are studying for the Indian market, but we are yet to arrive at a final decision on the same," Tata Engineering general manager (commercial) passenger car division Rajive Dube said.

Tata Engineering had unveiled `Zing' as a concept car at the auto expo held two years back. The car was projected as a `genuine people's car' based largely on two-wheeler components. In addition, the company is working towards introducing at least two new variants on the Indica platform, including a mid-size car, besides the luxury car `Magna' in the 2001 calendar year.

The company is also confident of meeting its sales target of 90,000 units of Indica this fiscal despite the downturn in demand in the passenger car industry, Dube said.

"Sales in the first ten days of August has been very encouraging and we are confident of recording a sizeable growth this month. We will also meet our targets for the fiscal."

Magna, unveiled at the auto expo earlier this year, marked Tata Engineerinmg's foray into the luxury segment of the passenger car market. The car would be available commercially by the end of the 2001 calendar year. Likely to sport a 1900cc engine, the car will be available in both petrol and diesel versions and would be the flagship car of the Tata Engineering portfolio. Tata group chairman Ratan Tata had earlier announced that the car would be priced between the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Mercedes E-Class. The `Magna' is a rear-wheel drive sedan.

Meanwhile, backed by an expanded offering from the sumo platform, Tata engineering ended the April-July period this year with a 26.1 per cent share of the utility vehicle market as 25.9 per cent in the same period last year. July sales at 2,245, were up four per cent over July 99, while cumulative sales for the period April-July 2000 were up nine per cent at 8,456 units. The company's passenger car business unit registered a total sale of 5,779 vehicles in the month of July, a decline of 8 per cent on a month-on-month basis. Indica sales for the month stood at 3,534 units.
