Inflation rate inches up to 6.4 per cent
The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index has clocked 6.4 per cent for the latest recorded week July 29. Last week, it stood at 6.3 per cent. The point-to-point annual rate of inflation had resumed its upward march in the last three weeks before which it had momentarily stood at the 6 per cent level for sometime.DPC projects slide in net this fiscal
Dabhol Power Company (DPC), which clocked a profit of Rs 198 crore during May 1999-Mar 2000, has projected a dip in the net income at $68.758 million in the current fiscal, compared to $84.027 million in the previous year. DPC has assumed a slide in net income because of high cost of rupee debt compared to current rates. It has assumed a foreign exchange rate at 47.41 in the current fiscal compared to 44.78 last year.
Tata Engg studying micro car `Zing'
Buoyed by the success of its small car Indica, Tata Engineering is now exploring the feasibility of driving down its micro car `Zing' on the Indian roads. Tata Engineering had unveiled `Zing' as a concept car at the auto expo held two years back. The car was projected as a `genuine people's car' based largely on two-wheeler components.
Bangalore hotels occupancy highest
Hotels in Bangalore enjoyed the highest occupancy among cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai in India at 66.2 per cent in 1999-2000, an increase of 14 per cent over the previous year, according to the Pannell Kerr Forster (PKF) City Survey - 2000 edition. Besides Bangalore was the only city, among the four, to experience an increase in room yields by 5.2 per cent over the previous year.
TEC row with BSES
The row between Tata Electric Companies and BSES over the payment of standby charges worth Rs 159 crore has taken a new turn with the BSES expecting intervention by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission for an early settlement. Simultaneously, BSES has requested the Maharashtra State Electricity Board not to link the No Objection Certificate for its Saphale power project under section 44 of Electricity Supply Act, 1948 and payment of standby charges to TEC.
Rupee, fund flows to guide market
Bruised by a tumbling currency and lacklustre institutional and foreign buying interest, stocks are expected to start the week cautiously with few prospects of an upturn. The Sensex is likely to move in a narrow 150-point range during the week, as investors wait for the forex market to stabilise.
GTB to launch bill payment over Net
Global Trust Bank will shortly launch an Electronic Bill Presentation and Payment service over the Internet. GTB executive director Sridhar Subasri said that the bank has signed an agreement with Infosys for the "Pay Away" software as part of this initiative.
New BIS standards for concrete
The Bureau of Indian Standards has formulated new specifications for plain and reinforced concrete. According to the new standard, IS 456 : 2000, a concrete technologist will be expected to meet a wide range of requirements including limiting formation of cracks, provisions for fire resistance, estimation of loads on beams, use of new materials like silica furne, rice husk ash.
