Revival of monsoon worries weathermen

Ashok B Sharma
New Delhi, Aug 13: The weathermen are sitting with their fingers crossed about the revival of monsoon activity in most parts of the country by the recent formation of low pressure area over north Bay of Bengal on August 7 and that which has moved ahead inland and persisted till now. Rainfall activity was subdued for a brief period before August 7.

This low pressure area has since persisted and by August 12 it has moved over to Vidarbha and adjoining areas of MP lay as a cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels over the same region. The axis of the monsoon trough on sea level chart on August 12 passed through Barmer, Bhopal, Raipur, Gopalpur and thence south-eastwards to west-central Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic circulation over Gujarat region and adjoining areas now lay over Saurashtra and Kutch, adjoining areas of Gujarat region, north central of west coast and northeast Arabian Sea between 1.5 and 5.8 kms ASL. The off-shore trough on sea level chart from south Gujarat coast to Kerala coast persists. A cyclonic circulation extending upto 2.1 kms ASL lay over northwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Pakistan.

The low pressure area formed on August 7 over north Bay of Bengal became well marked in-situ on August 8. The system continued to persist over north and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on August 9. In the morning of August 10 it moved westward and lay off north Andhra Pradesh coast. In the morning of August 11, this low pressure area moved westnorth-westward and lay over Vidarbha and neighbourhood.

So far in course of its movements, the low pressure areas has given good rainfall in the regions.

No depression in first half
No monsoon depression was formed in the first half of the current monsoon period in June-July. In June three low pressure areas and in July four low pressure areas formed over the Bay of Bengal. They moved in a northwesterly direction along the monsoon trough. These system, therefore, resulted in good rainfall over central and northwest India.
