PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Aug 9: The Government intends to issue an order before September 30, providing for compulsory use of jute packaging of certain commodities.Making a statement in the Lok Sabha in response to a calling attention notice, minister of textiles Kashiram Rana said the order would take into account various factors like the size of the jute crop, the expected quantity of production of foodgrains and sugar and impact of the introduction of 50 kg bags. The minister denied the allegation that the Government had diluted the Jute Packaging Act, 1987 by reducing the jute packaging of foodgrains and sugar from 100 per cent to 90 per cent and urea to 15 per cent from 20 per cent under pressure from the plastic lobby. He said the Government had to reduce the the jute packaging of foodgrains and sugar to 90 per cent as there was acute shortge of gunny bags in June.
