Composite food processing laws on the cards

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi: The Government will soon formulate a National Processed Food Development Act (NPFDA) integrating all laws, rules and orders in food processing and create a regulatory authority to facilitate uniform implementation of the law. "We want to formulate an umbrella act assimilating all the existing laws and regulations prevailing in the food processing industry," agriculture minister Nitish Kumar said.

The new act would also provide provisions for setting upfutures markets for the sustanance and stability of the food processing industry, he said adding it would provide for setting up a special fund to finance processed food industry.

Special provisions for difficult and backward areas by providing incentives to split units - main units would be located in backward areas and the downstream unit to make consumer items located outside difficult area - near the market, he said. Kumar said his ministry had sought full excise exemption on the processed food from the finance ministry to give boost to the industry which was currently witnessing a negative growth.
