Tokyo: The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has resolved national security concern over a Japanese firm's $5.5 billion plan to buy Web-host Verio Inc, the Wall Street Journal said in its electronic edition on Friday. The agreement would represent a major step towards clearing a path for foreign investment in the fast-growing US Internet sector and give Japanese telecoms giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) a solid base in the US market. The newspaper quoted US officials as saying an agreement, aspects of which still need to be finalised, was crafted over weeks of intense talks between NTT and officials from the FBI and the Justice Department. Those talks highlighted growing law-enforcement fears that the entry of foreign firms into the expanding US telephone and Internet markets may undermine the FBI's ability to investigate criminals by tapping into their digital communications.
