VSNL-Indiainfo deal on track

Priya Srinivasan
Mumbai: India specific horizontal portal Indiainfo.com which had signed an MoU with VSNL to serve as the default home page for all VSNL subscribers, is likely to submit the details of the home page and dialer type to VSNL within the next four or five days, according to director, operations, VSNL, Amitabh Kumar.

Speculation about a stalemate in the deal has been rife give the passage of four months since the MoU between the two parties was announced. As per the MoU, VSNL will take a 30 per cent stake in Indiainfo in return for Indiainfo's status as the ISP's default home page. As per the agreement which is yet to be signed, Indiainfo will also provide a bank guarantee of Rs 200 crore to the ISP. Moreever VSNL will be awarded 20 per cent of the portal's revenues for the three years following the agreement. "Their liability starts from the day they sign the agreement and that is likely to be once the details of the home page and dialer are accepted within the next week" said Kumar.

While he indicated that the basic parameters of the agreement still hold, when asked about the time lapse in activating the deal, Kumar said that VSNL was awaiting the final version of the home page and dialer from Indiainfo.Indiainfo officials indicated that there has been some delay but were unable to cite the precise reasons since the deal was being handled out of the chairman's office in the US. The precise nature of these issues remains a mystery. VSNL's recent monsoon offering which garnered about 75,000 new customers and 1.4 lakh renewals could have served as a good opportunity to the portal in terms of a brand creation exercise. Surprisingly, Indiainfo was not launched as part of this package either.
