NRI-promoted credit card major plans to base IT foray in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The San Fransisco-based credit card major Providian Financial has expressed its desire to set up the India country headquarters in Gujarat, besides setting up call centres and other IT related services in the country.The multi-national corporation led by non-resident Gujarati Shailesh Mehta, has conveyed its decision to set up shop in Gujarat, to state government's minister for Information Technology and Transport Bimal Shah as well as the Chief Minister's adviser (IT) NV Vasani. The decision has been taken after the company's team visited Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat.However, the company preferred Gujarat for its user-friendly IT incentives policy, better IT-related infrastructure facilities and human sources availability. The set-up is likely to be located near the InfoCity on the Gandhinagar-Ahmedabad highway. Reliance's proposed Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is also coming up at an adjoining 50-acre plot. Providian is the fifth largest credit company with assets worth $23 billion.
