ICICI Bank to introduce Internet kiosks

Nitya Varadarajan
Chennai: ICICI Bank Limited is planning to introduce Internet kiosks at its ATMs (automated teller machines) to enable customers have quick and easy Internet access for Internet banking. ICICI Bank senior executive vice-president M N Gopinath said the facility would enable those not having Internet connections at home to use the technology.

The kiosks have been set up in three ATMs in Mumbai as an experimental project. ICICI which is proving to be very active in Web-related projects and portals had recently launched the `Bill Junction' in Mumbai which enables customers (even those not having accounts with ICICI Bank) to make utility payments through the Net. The transaction fee per bill is Rs 5.

ICICI is also working on a payment gateway with Compaq and QSI of Australia. Other initiatives such as `Bank at campus' targeting college students and `kid-e-bank' teaching and encouraging children the use of Internet and banking had also received good responses. The latter had received 6,000 responses on the day of launch.

These initiatives are also expected to give an additional impetus to using the kiosks located at convenient distances safe in the ATMs and if found popular will be carried to non-metro cities.

Gopinath was in Chennai to announce the launch of ICICI Bank-Chennai Telephones tie-up for payment of telephone bills through Internet. Chennai circle was the first in the country to introduce this facility within DOT.

MTNL too has similar arrangements, but it does not have the bill payment facility of Chennai Telephones. Customers here can view their bills on the Net and make a single click for payment, while the bills cannot be viewed in the case of MTNL.
