Thailand asks India to liberalise its aviation policy

FEBRUARY 1: Thailand on Tuesday asked India to liberalise its open sky policy for more air traffic from Thailand for boosting tourism and bilateral trade between the two countries. "India has a huge Buddhist tourism potential which can be tapped only through increasing Air traffic between Buddhist nations," Thailand deputy minister of commerce Goanpot Asvinvichit told reporters in New Delhi. Thailand is keenly interested in increasing cooperation with India in the tourism sector by making the Thai Airline's Delhi-Bangkok flight a daily feature and increasing frequency of Mumbai-Bangkok flight, he said.

Asvinvichit, who is leading a delegation of prominent Thai businessmen to India, impressed upon the minister of state for commerce and industry during his meeting on Monday the scope for increased Air traffic between the two countries to boost tourism. Out of the over eight million tourists visiting Thailand, only 1.5 lakh are Indian while the figure of Thai tourists visiting India is just 20,000, he said adding tourism infrastructure like transportation, hotels and roads have to be worked upon in Buddhist tourist destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
