Mumbai, Jan 3: Maharashtra government will hold negotiations with the transport unions on Tuesday with a view to end the inconvenience caused to the people due to the transporters' strike started on Sunday midnight, minister of state for transport Gangadhar Gade said on Monday.Addressing a press conference, Gade said the government will also appeal the strikers to put forth their opinion in the Supreme Court or adopt some other method to end the inconvenience caused to the people in the city.
When asked whether the government will consider about the contempt of the court commited by the transport unions by proceeding on strike inspite of the Mumbai high court directives, the minister replied in negative. Only 30 to 40 per cent of the total vehicles need emission checks therefore the same norms can not be applied to all the vehicles, he added.
However the state government will follow the Mumbai high court directives to ensure that all the vehicles entering the metropolis comply with the emission norms, he said.
Meanwhile the state government has made alternative arrangement by providing a total of 230 additional buses for the passengers coming to the city, he said. The 230 fleet of buses included 150 Brihanmumbai Electricity State Corporation (BEST) buses and 80 state transport buses, he added. Also the government has made necessary arrangements to ensure that supply of essential commodities was not not affected in view of the strike, he added.
Meanwhile, a transporters' organisation under the banner of Mumbai Mal Vahatuk Ani Pravasi Vahatuk Malak-Chalak Kriti Samiti (Mvapks), on Monday accused the government of making them scapegoats and letting off the real offenders responsible for polluting environment.
Addressing reporters called to protest the transport commissioner's decision to implement high court directive to ensure that all vehicles entering the city comply with emission norms, the Samiti joint convenor Sharad Rao said average autorickshaw and taxi owners had been unnecessarily targeted while the private car owners had been let off.
