Deshmukh faces a test as race for speaker's post heats up
Sanjay Jog
Mumbai, Oct 21: Tomorrow's election to the coveted post of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly speaker will be a real acid test for the Vilasrao Deshmukh-led Lokshahi Aghadhi government. The election was necessitated following the opposition Shiv Sena-BJP alliance's decision to field its candidate and former chairman of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, Girish Bapat (BJP) against the Lokshahi Aghadi candidate and the former urban development minister Arun Gujarathi (Nationalist Congress Party). The strength of NCP-Congress in the 288-member assembly is 132 (Congress MLA Marzban Patrawala died yesterday) and that of their allies is as follows: Peasants and Workers Party-5, Janata Dal (secular)- 2, CPM-2, Samajwadi Party-2, Republican Party of India (Gavai)-1. Interestingly, the RPI (Ambedkar-Bahujan Mahasangh), an electoral ally of Congress, having three members in the assembly, has announced that it would be adopting an "independent path" following non-inclusion of their nominees in the expanded Deshmukh ministry. While Sena has 69 members in the assembly, BJP has 56 members in the lower house. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
