Cotton suffers fresh setback on slack mill demand

Mumbai, Oct 21: Cotton price suffered further setback following slack mill demand and increased selling pressure.

In Punjab zone J-34 saw-ginned good average price lost Rs 40 to 50 a maund. Punjab were on offer at Rs 1600-1660, Haryana at Rs 1540-1570 and Rajasthan at Rs 1520-1540 spot. Cart selected Punjab shed Rs 20 at Rs 1665-1690 while Haryana slid down from Rs 1625-1635 to Rs 1580-1595. Roller-ginned good average J-34 turned cheaper by Rs 30 to 40 as Punjab were on offer at Rs 1560-1570, Haryana and Rajasthan both at Rs 1470-1480.

Bengal Deshi roller-ginned lost Rs 30 as Punjab and Haryana were quoted at Rs 1190-1240 and at Rs 1200-1215 respectively while Rajasthan were on offer at Rs 1220-1240.

Arrivals comprised of 3500 bales of Bengal Deshi and 7500 bales of J-34.Gujarat cotton also were weak by Rs 100 a candy. V-797 were placed at Rs 13,600-13,800 and Sanker at Rs 19,500-19,800 a candy.

Future contracts were down by 20 to 24 points in line with trend in the ready section. December finished at Rs 4420, February at Rs 4410 and April at Rs 4435. The turnover totalled Rs 4.40 crores. New York also ruled weak with the contracts losing 0.55 to 0.68 cents. December ruled at 53.12, March at 54.60, May at 55.50 and July at 56.30 cents.

Sugar steady

A steady condition prevailed on the sugar market.

M-30 ruled at Rs 1525-1600 and S-30 at Rs 1480-1540 a quintal ex-godown. Ex-octroi checkpost and ex-mill transaction remained suspended in view of indefinite transport strike.

Gold suffers

Gold prices suffered fresh losses on the bullion market here today. Silver however moved in a narrow range and closed on a mixed note.

Standard gold lost by Rs 30 at Rs 4,770 per 10 gm. Gold .22 carat was down by same margin at Rs 4,410 per 10 gm. Prices of gold biscuit (116.50 gm.) dropped by Rs 200 at Rs 55,800 per piece. Physical demand for gold was petered out on conclusion of Dassera festival. Steady overseas supplies and fresh losses in the global prices prompted profit-taking by stockists and local bankers. In the global market gold slid further from $309 to $304.50/305 per ounce.

Silver .999 looked up by Rs 20 at Rs 8,190 per kg. Silver .916 moved down by Rs 20 at Rs 8,050 per kg on steady arrivals of raw silver from local sources, according to market sources. Delhi advices remained discouraging and in the international market the white metal reacted from $5.25 to $5.15 and settled down at $5.19 per ounce.

Castor futures slide

Groundnut oil ruled steady on the oil, oilseeds market here today. Castorseed and its oil suffered fresh loses amidst steady inflow while overseas demand remained restricted.

Groundnut oil ruled quiet at Rs 375 per 10 kg in absence of buying interest. However supplies remained tight on account of transporters strike. In Rajkot prices quoted lower by Rs 10 at Rs 600 per 15 kg. Imported palm oil placed Rs 2 lower at Rs 206 per 10 kg owing to weak overseas advices. In the global market palm oil quoted $10 lower at $362.50 per tonne for nearby delivery and $365/370 per tonne for long delivery.

Castor oil slid by Rs 3 at Rs 375/387 per 10 kg. Castorseed ready were down by Rs 15 at Rs 1,719/1,725 per quintal in sympathy.

In the future section castorseed December delivery reacted from Rs 1,752 to Rs 1,696 before concluding at Rs 1,707 per quintal on steady bull liquidation. In Ahmedabad prices finished lower at Rs 1,696 and in Rajkot at Rs 1,689.50 per quintal. In the international castor oil future market December delivery ruled quiet at Rs 391 and February delivery placed at Rs 396 per 10 kg.

Yarn unchanged

A quietly steady condition prevailed on the yarn market.

Viscose filament yarn bright cones first quality Century Rayon 150dn ruled at Rs 196 and 120dn at Rs 205 a kg. 100dn were placed at Rs 220 and 75dn at Rs 252.

Polyester yarn grey first quality of medium-sized units 80dn roto ruled at Rs 95-97, weft at Rs 88-89, 150dn weft at Rs 75-76, warp at Rs 83-84, single roto at Rs 77-78 and double roto at Rs 79-80.

Grains quiet

Prices ruled quietly steady as business passing came to a virtual halt in view of transport strike.

Wheat milling indigenous were placed at Rs 795-800 and imported at Rs 785-795 a quintal. North Gujarat Sonakalyan were on offer at Rs 815-825, Tukadi at Rs 850-875 and 496 at Rs 900.

MP Lokvan were quoted at Rs 900-925, 147 at Rs 900-1000 and Sarbati at Rs 1000-1400. Rice Perimal new ruled at Rs 950-975.
