New Delhi, Oct 3: The exports of cotton yarn in the period April-August registered a remarkable increase of 11.6 per cent in dollar terms over the corresponding period in the previous year. The exports of cotton yarn in the current period has achieved 43.9 per cent of its set target.This remarkable performance in exports of cotton yarn considerably helped to raise the total exports of textiles in the current period by 2.6 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year. The exports of cotton yarn in the current period has been $658.8 million in value terms as against $590.2 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.
The total exports of textiles in the current period has been of the value of $5193.80 million as against $5064.3 million in the corresponding period in the previous year. The total exports of textiles has achieved 36.1 per cent of the target.
Though the exports of readymade garments has a larger share of total exports in dollar terms being at $2114.9 million, theexports of this item in the current period grew at only 3.8 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year and achieved only 35.2 per cent of its target.
Handicrafts exports, on the other hand, achieved 36.6 per cent of its export target. Exports of handicrafts, other than carpets and floor coverings increased by 10.3 per cent in dollar terms in the current period over the corresponding period in the previous year.
The exports of handicrafts in the current period has been $535 million in value terms as against $485 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.
The exports of carpets and other floor coverings achieved 37.4 per cent of its target, but the increase in its exports in dollar terms is only 6.4 per cent being at $198 million as against $186.1 million in the corresponding period in the previous year. The second in the rank to cotton yarns in meeting export target is man-made textiles. Exports of man-made textiles achieved 38.1 per cent of its target but it marginallyincreased in value terms by mere 0.4 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year.
The export of man-made textiles in the current period is $419.2 million as against $ 417.4 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.Amongst the items which fared badly is jute. The exports of jute in dollar terms declined by 30.4 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year and could achieve only 30.1 per cent of its export target, the lowest amongst all other textile items. The exports of jute in the current period is only $46 million as against $66.1 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.
But in the overall share of the current exports of textiles, the share of coir is the lowest. The exports of coir in the current period declined by 8.7 per cent in the current period being at $26.6 million as against $29.1 million in the corresponding period last year.
However, the exports of coir achieved 34.5 per cent of its set target in the current year.
The declinein exports of wool and woollens products was more in value terms by 13.8 per cent. The exports of wool and woollen products in the current period is $107.1 million as against $124.2 million in the corresponding period in the previous year. But the exports of wool and woollen products achieved 35.7 per cent of its set target.
The exports of cotton fabrics and made-ups also registered a decline in the current period in value terms.
