Agro-exports set for growth, says Yoginder Alagh
Our Bureau
Bangalore, Dec 27: The Indian agriculture export segment is poised for growth. It appears to be getting globally competitive on account of two important changes - the reduction in the excessive protection accorded to the manufacturing sector and ensuring of remunerative market oriented prices to the farmers, according to Jawaharlal Nehru University vice chancellor Yoginder K Alagh.Alagh said the reduction in protection accorded to manufacturing sector has improved the relative profitability of agriculture and the high prices to farmers have enhanced the terms of trade for agriculture. He was addressing the 81st annual conference of the Indian Economic Association in Bangalore on Sunday. ``India, however, should promote and strengthen the domestic processing industry that can increase the exports of value added agriculture products. The global prices of primary products are likely to be in our favour once the level of agriculture subsidies in the advanced industrial countries are reduced. However, our focusshould be for improving the quality of produces to achieve export growth,'' he said. Indian industry should provide agro business services to the farming community to adopt modern technology, post harvest facilities, use of quality inputs and improved methods of cultivation for increasing the production and productivity of agricultural commodities.
