Automatic approvals to widen; commodity price curbs may go
Addressing the annual general meeting of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) in New Delhi, the finance minister Yashwant Sinha on Sunday announced that the government would soon be expanding the list of industries under the automatic approval route. He also made a case for removal of price controls on a host of commodities but admitted that it was not an easy task.
Ministry austerity may clip pharma pricing authority
The ministry of chemicals and fertilisers is contemplating a series of cost-cutting measures which may see a dilution in the role of the apex drug pricing body, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The ministry is working on three key proposals: the scrapping of the NPPA chairman's post; transfer of around 14 NPPA officials to the ministry under a joint secretary; and a surrender of the premises occupied by the apex body.
CSO plans quick industry estimates by December
The Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) under the ministry of planning and programme implementation has decided to come out with the first quick estimates of the annual survey of industries for 1997-98 by December this year. This will be for the record first time that the industry survey results will be available to public in a such a short period.
