New Delhi: The government's decision to put the sports goods industry under OGL last year has unleashed a flurry of activities amongst Indian entrepreneurs who have been looking for opportunities in joint ventures, collaborations and strategic alliances.Encouraged by the government's decision, various organisations have joined hands to organise International Sports, Health & Fitness Exhibition (ISFE'98), where sports and health product manufacturers from India and abroad will exhibit their products. This exhibition is being organised by MECPRO under the aegis of Sports Goods Export Promotion Council(SGEPC), Sports Authority of India, and World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry.
Citing the example of China, Andre Gorgemans, secretary general, World Sports Goods Industry, says, "Cashing in on the opportunity, China has made a major stride in the international market. The total sports good exports from China this year was worth $ 3.5 dollars."
Contrary to that, the Indian sports goods industry, whichis dominated by the SME sector, had a total turnover of $ 102 million only. of which 60 percent was exported.
"We have only a handful of entrepreneurs who can afford to participate in international sports fairs. Thus, inability to know the international demands limits their scope," says Rajive Arora, vice president, Mecpro Expositions. ISFE'98 can provide the much-needed platform to small entrepreneurs to market their products to international buyers.
