Naphtha nonsense

[Details] Prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral has hinted that a subsidy is in the offing for naphtha as fuel for power projects. Maximum value addition to naphtha takes place in the petrochemical industry, not in the power sector, where it is simply burnt to generate steam.

Not quite, minister

[Details] Druing Rajiv Gandhi's prime ministership, some members of the Planning Commission had tried, though in vain, to come up with an Eighth Plan with an annual growth rate of 7% plus. Now the union finance minister says that the Indian economy would grow at 9% annually because of on-going reforms.

A matter of duty written off

[Details] There is a distinct difference between the words "duty leviable" and "duty payable" when it involves customs duty. However, recently it has come to light that the customs staff did not differentiate between the two meanings leading to writing off of recoverable countervailing duty.
