Political -- Fodder scam accused surrenders


PK Jaiswal, a supplier and fodder scam accused, on Wednesday surrendered before a special court which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days in a conspiracy angle case of the multi-crore scam.

Jaiswal surrendered before the designated judge, SK Lal, following arrest warrant against him. The former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav also an accused in the fodder scam has been remanded to judicial custody till September 4.

Kesri renominates Patnaik, Kumar and Fernandes: The congress president Sitaram Kesri today renominated three of his prominent supporters- JB Patnaik, Meira Kumar and Oscar Fernandes as members of the congress working committee and sprang a surprise by appointing Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla to the apex policy making body. After today's nominations only three of the nine seats from the nominated category in the CWC are yet to be filled. Former finance minister Manmohan Singh and former Kerala chief minister AK Anthony have already been on CWC just a week after the Calcutta plenary session.

No truck with secular parties says Scindia: CWC member Madhavrao Scindia today ruled out his party entering into any alliance with the left and secular parties and said the congress was strong enough to stand by itself and would come back to power. He blamed the left parties and Janata Dal for giving a golden opportunity in 1989 to BJP to increase its strength in the Lok Sabha from two to 89 seats by their alliance. "What the BJP got was not its votes but those of the alliance including the left parties."

HC dismisses police plea in Samant murder case: A writ petition, seeking CBI probe into the "brain" behind the brutal murder of trade union leader Datta Samant, was today dismissed by a division bench of the Mumbai high court on the ground that there was no material to suspect the hand of any industrialist in the crime. On going through the case diaries produced by police, Justice VP Tipnis and Justice AB Palkar observed "there was no material to suggest the hand of any industrialist behind the murder. But in case if such material comes across during the trial, it will certainly be considered."
