Sonam Kapoor got candid during a recent interview and admitted that she was molested as a child. The actress, who has won critical acclaim for her turn as Neerja, opened up about her traumatic experience in an interview with Rajeev Masand. While talking about the issue of sexual abuse, she said, “I know, I have been molested when I was younger and it was traumatising.”
Several actresses had been called for raising awareness on the issue, including Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt and Radhika Apte. When Sonam revealed her experiences as a child, they rallied on to support her and talked about the need for people to speak up about the issue. According to a report in DNA, Sonam got quite emotional after she recalled the incident of abuse, which makes it even more commendable that she wanted to raise awareness on the issue. Alia had shared a photo on Instagram last week of the actresses coming together for the interview. She captioned it, “A Monday afternoon very well spent with such lovely, beautiful, inspiring(wow I can go on and on) women!!!!! Thank you @rajeevmasand for making it happen. Love you girls.”
Over the years, several celebrities have come forward about the need for awareness surrounding the issue of child abuse. For instance, Anoushka Shankar and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actress Kalki Koechlin had admitted in an interview that she had been abused as a child as well. Taapsee Pannu, who starred in Pink this year, said she had faced a lot of eve-teasing, while Anurag Kashyap had revealed that he was subjected to abuse continuously for 11 years as a child.
