Assam Tourism just got a lot hotter as Priyanka Chopra is its new brand ambassador. The Mary Kom actress will promote the state’s tourism for two years, revealed Assam’s government, according to PTI. Priyanka, who recently returned to Mumbai after wrapping up filming for Quantico’s latest season, will travel to Guwahati on December 24 to attend the International Tour Operators Conclave. While rumours had surfaced earlier this year that Priyanka was charging almost Rs 15 crore for her stint, Assam Tourism Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has since clarified that the two-year contract is ‘free of cost’. The government will, however, compensate her for any work she might have to forgo while fulfilling her duties as brand ambassador.
The position of brand ambassador was initially offered to Sachin Tendulkar, but the cricketing legend turned it down, revealed Sarma. After the government approached another four-five stars, they finally settled on PeeCee. While Sarma didn’t specify why Sachin turned down the post, the move to choose Priyanka definitely seems like a smart one. The actress is one of the fastest rising stars globally, becoming a familiar face in both the east and the west. She recently got appointed as UN’s Global Goodwill Ambassador and beat actors like Leonardo DiCaprio to come out as IMDB’s most searched star. Sarma added that with Priyanka as the state’s ambassador, Assam Tourism could have a presence in countries like the US, UK, Japan and Germany.
