Padmaavat box office collection is soaring and this Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer is heading for the Rs 200 cr mark. It has definitely started off the new year for Bollywood with a bang. The year 2017 though was not a memorable one for cinegoers as the industry failed to serve up spectacular cinematic extravagance on screen barring just a few movies. But 2018 may just see brighter days as some really noteworthy releases are slated for release and these might set the box office on fire. Though the start was a little shaky with films Like Kaalakaandi and Mukaabaaz proving to be big duds, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat surely brought in some solace. The next big release is Akshay Kumar’s PadMan which hits the screen on February 9. Formerly scheduled to coincide with the release of Deepika Padukone starrer, the actor decided to pull back and settled for a later release to avoid a BO clash. By all accounts, this big step may just help Khiladi Akshay Kumar’s PadMan and actually turn it into the top-most blockbuster of 2018. Why? There are more reasons than just one. Fans and ardent cinema watchers are more than excited for the film because Bollywood has never seen anything like this. Here is why PadMan is going to be the next big thing of Bollywood:
Budget: The budget of PadMan has been estimated somewhere around Rs 90 cr. Given Akshay Kumar’s latest BO trends in Bollywood, none of his recent films have earned less than Rs 100 cr and they have proved to be a major hit in a year which barely saw good films coming. Given the present budget of the film and the sky-high hype around it, one thing is for sure that the film will not settle for anything less than Rs 200 cr. So if calculations are correct, the film is set to earn double the amount of its expenditure which and can well etch some phenomenal box office records as well. The budget and BO calculation is likely to favour PadMan when compared with Padmaavat, which had a budget of Rs 190 cr.
Akshay Kumar films: The actor had two releases last year, Jolly LLB and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. Both these films witnessed some extraordinary response at the box office despite being niche films. Notably, while Jolly LLB earned a massive Rs 117 cr in the domestic market, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha did even better and earned a whopping Rs 134.44 cr. Given the upward trend, it is being estimated that the film will have a lifetime collection of nothing less than Rs 200 cr. Having made such a big impact, there will be no cinema that would ignore PadMan and that would apply virtually to all parts of country.
Akshay Kumar brand value: Over the years with small steps, Khiladi Kumar has turned out to be one of the most dependable actors in the industry. The R Balki directorial deals with a very unconventional plot of the menstrual cycle and how it is still treated as a taboo in our country and the treatment that Akshay has given it through his superb performances is guaranteed to draw in huge numbers to theatres. He is one of the best actors in the world and that makes him one of the most commercially viable ones too. He has given the Khans a run for their money even. Also, unlike the Khans, who have the policy of releasing one film a year, Akshay Kumar has created a niche for himself and does not go by that policy. From commercial films, Akshay Kumar off late has started showing his knack for off beat themes and films with a social message that touches the hearts of the public. PadMan is the next big thing majorly because of the association with the actor.
PadMan theme: Cinegoers off late have ditched the idea of typical rom-com and have shown their interest in films with a ‘difference’. This is the reason why 2017 saw the success of films like Newton, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. PadMan ventures onto an untrodden path and picks a very different theme, which audiences can relate to and it has a social message as well. The word of mouth boost that this will get will definitely be massive. Gone are the days when you can just woo your audience with good songs and action, audiences these days throng the theatres because of the content as well. PadMan might emerge as the audiences’ favourite for this very reason alone.
Cast and director: Padman is being helmed by R Balki who has to his fame masterclass films like Paa and Cheenikum. The cast boasts of Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor and the combination is sure to draw the audience to the theatres. Radhika Apte for the very first time will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar and their chemistry is already wooing the audience.
And just remember, while controversy has boosted Padmaavat take at BO, Akshay Kumar’s PadMan is looking at no such push! It is set to make waves under its own power.
