Udta Punjab released today and expectations are that it will do very well at the box office despite being leaked online. Leading up to the release date, a number of concerned celebrities had a lot to say about the movie, at least what was happening around it over the last few days. Here we take a look at some of the more prominent figures involved who reacted in the public sphere over the freedom that a filmmaker has to express his views and the huge loss of money from rampant piracy especially if its the film before the release:
Filmmaker Karan Johar: “I would request all, please do not watch the leaked film online. Filmmakers make the films with a lot of hard work passion and energy and to watch it on any other format other than the format that it was designed to be is incorrect, illegal. Please watch it in cinema halls and not online.”
Actress Alia Bhatt, who plays the role of an aspiring hockey player in the movie, said, “Guys please please do not waste 2 years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears… Please watch #UdtaPunjab in only in theatres.”
Film’s lead actor Shahid Kapoor reacted to Udta Punjab leak by requesting fans to watch the movie in theatres. Here’s what he said on Twitter, “Blood and sweat of many in this film. It’s been your battle as much as ours. Now is the time you can show it. Watch UdtaPunjab in theatres.”
Co-producer Anurag Kashyap on his Facebook page said, “So, all downloaders of Udta Punjab, I urge, wait till Saturday till you decide to not pay for the film, don’t download and share, curb the curiosity for two more days. Thank you for reading this. I also say that no one can stop your right to download a film.”
On Udta Punjab leak, Aamir Khan reacted strongly by saying, “I am not sure whether it was a CBFC copy. But if it is a censor copy then it’s a shame for CBFC and reflects badly on them. Piracy is an issue, which we all have been fighting for a very long time.”
“A big #dishoom to the Pirates. Go watch #UdtaPunjab only in the theatre,” tweeted Varun Dhawan.
