For Dear Zindagi fans, this might be a tough one to accept – the film in which Alia Bhatt and Shahrukh Khan won our hearts could be based on the Canadian TV series Being Erica. The film, directed by Gauri Shinde, does have many striking similarities with the series. Firstly, you have Kaira/Erica, who visits a therapist after facing trouble in her relationships and with her family. Jug or his Canadian counterpart Dr. Tom both have out-of-the-box methods of dealing with their patients and even some of their dialogues are dishearteningly similar aka Jug’s “Har tooti hui cheez jodi ja sakti hai,” and Tom’s “Whatever it is that you are unhappy about, I can fix it.”
To clinch the matter, Erica’s boyfriend Ethan is every woman’s dream and yet she cheats on him and eventually dumps him – anyone else reminded of Alia and Angad Bedi’s characters? Ali Zafar’s character finds a parallel in Kai who is also a musician and falls for Erica.
The one difference is that Dear Zindagi doesn’t delve into time travel, which Dr. Tom uses in his therapy for Erica. Still, for a film hailed for its fresh concept, this revelation does feel like a downer. Gauri maintains, however, that the similarities are just a coincidence. According to a report in DNA, she responded, “Huh? I don’t even know what series you are talking about. But, yes, it is a good try on the part of whoever wants to bring this movie down. Why don’t people watch the show, since I haven’t, and decide for themselves? I don’t read rubbish. There is so much baseless crap out there and I can’t respond to everything.”
