Dear Zindagi box office collections on opening day: Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt starrer is off to a great start with a 60% occupancy rate in metros in morning shows – it should improve thereafter, especially later in the day. This comes as no surprise given the immensely positive reviews by fans, the film fraternity and critics. Evening shows today will naturally see a higher occupancy rate, as eager fans of Shahrukh and Alia head to theaters after finishing off the tasks at the office. Given its occupancy rate, this slice-of-life film will in all likelihood earn anywhere south of Rs 15 crore on its opening day (day 1), although it would need a dramatically larger turnout if Dear Zindagi is to make the Rs 20 crore mark on its first day.

Given its current performance, Dear Zindagi, which was made on a budget of Rs 22 crore and an additional Rs 7-8 crore for marketing, will probably break even in its opening weekend. This will be something of a relief to Shahrukh, who may not have taken the actor’s fees, but will profit from it as the movie’s producer. Dear Zindagi is currently being shown on just 1100 screens across the country and this strategy is quite puzzling. However, it seems SRK has worked out a plan to deploy the movie strategically to milk it to the greatest possible extent by releasing it some of the top cinemas across the country. He looks to have done his homework and is confident of doing well at the BO.

What is crucial to Dear Zindagi performance at the box office not just on its opening day but also thereafter, is the word of mouth booster shot. The crowds at the early morning shows will have a large role to play in that. If they emerge impressed with the film, they will act as its natural ambassadors and these reviews will help lure crowds in greater numbers to the theaters. Shahrukh Khan’s fate rests in their hands.
