Baar Baar Dekho collections: Nitya Mehra directorial, Baar Baar Dekho box office collections failed to fire up despite the hype that both Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra tried to generate around it. In fact, the quality of the movie was evident right from the time the trailer and the Kala Chashma song were revealed and it was just glitz backed by nothing else. A hatchet job that should really have rung warning bells and sent the filmmakers running back to the editing table to get the really bad parts trashed and those that could not, well, change them as much as possible – what was actually required was a makeover. Predictably, the public hated it. Baar Baar Dekho has not been able to breach the Rs 10 cr mark even on Sunday and that means it failed to get a good word-of-mouth boost. What will follow on Monday is all too obvious.
Just trying to get a movie to run on the past popularity of an actress and pairing her up with an upcoming actor and making them do garish song ‘n dance routines will not do at all. Local artists are managing to create better, much more vibrant stuff with barely any resources. With enough resources, the filmmakers should have got much more out of both Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra. But that was simply not possible because the script was too shallow and binding, keeping the entire project shackled to a mediocre level it was never able to rise above.
Banking on star power is now totally passe. People want quality stuff. They see so much good work being done everywhere around them. Just check YouTube and various music channels and the level of professionalism is rising in amazing fashion. Some thrilling short films are being made too. While Bollywood has half-a-century worth of head-start, the same is not being reflected in the quality of the movies nor in the actual implementation.
Now that the deed is done and there is nothing else to do but wait and watch, the film barely drew in the crowds and we are talking just about the opening weekend. You can fill in the blanks about the ‘thereafter’. Check out the earnings – Day 1 (Fri): Rs 6.81 cr; Day 2 (Sat): Rs 7.65 cr; Day 3 (Sun): Rs 6.70 cr; TOTAL (NETT): Rs 21.16 cr (In India alone). In addition, Baar Baar Dekho collections are being padded up by foreign markets with North America leading at Rs 4.08 cr and UAE/GCC Rs 2.67 cr, UK Rs 1.33 cr and Australia Rs 0.59 cr.
Now, take a look at what Baar Baar Dekho budget was. As much as Rs 50 crore was spent on the movie. Out of this cost of production was Rs 35 crore and rest was spent on print and advertising. If the gap is to be covered, the movie will have to find a saviour. And fortunately for it, Eid holiday is on Tuesday and this will probably put the kind of big amount in the film’s bag that it really needs to make a point.
