Azhar box office collections: In the season of cricket, what with World Cup morphing instantly into the Indian Premier League (IPL), this movie based on the life of Team India’s former captain Mohammad Azharuddin, has done adequately well for itself, but not outstandingly well. After 4 days in theatres, Azhar collections have risen to Rs 23.8 crore in India alone – the break-up Day 1 (Fri): Rs 6.30 cr; Day 2 (Sat): Rs 7; Day 3 (Sun): Rs 7.5; Day 4 (Mon): Rs 3; TOTAL (NETT): Rs 23.8 crore. The movie stars Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai, Lara Dutta, Nargis Fakhri and Gautam Gulati.
While Virat Kolhi, M S Dhoni & co keep the crowds entertained in stadiums and at homes in front of the TV virtually on a nightly basis, very few takers have been left for Azhar and the same is visible in the earnings. The crowds at theatres have been thin while they have filled the seats in cricket stadiums in droves. Nevertheless, Azhar has collected as much as Rs 37.89 crore overall, if you add the foreign take to the total.
Going forward, Azhar earnings will keep on suffering from IPL woes, especially as the shortest form of the cricket game gets into the business end stage of the tournament. Azhar has not been able to get the kind of word of mouth boost that was expected from a movie that featured a mega player on the Indian cricket arena.
Still, Azhar makers must be counting their blessings as there is no other movie to act as a rival. Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Baaghi had logged Rs 74.37 crore as its lifetime collection after the end of its 2-week run and therefore did not act as a rival at the B.O. to Azhar.
Azhar movie details the life and times of Mohammad Azharuddin’s rise from a relative humble background to the pinnacle of glory as Team India skipper and his version of episodes in his life that occurred with other cricketing stalwarts and organisations. The film was roundly panned by most critics and was one of the reasons why it did not manage to rise to any great levels in the B.O. charts.
