Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush starrer ‘Shamitabh’ box office collections seem unlikely to cross Rs 20 crore in the first week. The movie’s business has been pegged at Rs 16.60 crore in first five days with a maximum of Rs 5 crore from Sunday
Though ‘Shamitabh’ was the biggest movie over the weekend in the India box office, the business generated by it has been moderate. the movie had a reasonably good showing in the multiplexes and managed to generate Rs 13.25 crore in the opening weekend with Rs 3.5 from the opening day, Rs 4.75 crore from Saturday and Rs 5 crore from Sunday.
In fact, ‘Shamitabh’ stands as the third in the list of 2015’s top opening weekend earners, behind Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’ (Rs 36.07 crore) and Arjun Singh-Sonakshi Sinha’s ‘Tevar’ (Rs 22.05 crore). Overall, the movie continues to be in No 5 position after ‘Baby’ (Rs 89.14 crore), ‘Tevar’ (Rs 39.26 crore), ‘Alone’ (Rs 19.33 crore) and Dolly Ki Doli (Rs 19.26 crore).
Targeted at a niche audience, ‘Shamitabh’, which got mixed reviews, could not turn out to be a big crowd puller.
‘Shamitabh’ has done better than Big B’s last film ‘Bhoothnath Returns’, which made Rs 18.02 crore in the first weekend with a lifetime collections of Rs 39.54 crore. Big B’s latest, however, is unlikely to overtake ‘Bhoothnath Returns’ in lifetime collections with the upcoming release of Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Roy’ this week.
It may be mentioned that the megastar is yet to have a Rs 100 crore on his kitty, except ‘Bol Bachchan’ where he did an item number.
