Airlift box office collections of Rs 83.50 crore have have become superstar Akshay Kumar’s Highest Opening Week grosser. The film has been doing well at the box office and received a big boost on Republic Day too, indicating it will continue to pose a challenge to the new releases on Friday and beyond. In this box office analysis we take a look at the Opening Week collections of Airlift while comparing them to Akshay Kumar’s previous releases.
Airlift, which opened to rave reviews from the critics, had the audience too praising it for its dramatic yet entertaining show – the film is based on one of the biggest evacuation stories in recent times in which an Indian man in Kuwait, an unsung hero, played a stellar role. For the record, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the film is quite dramatic, but ‘rather short on facts.’
Left behind in the list are Akshay Kumar’s previous releases like Rowdy Rathore that collected Rs 79.52 cr, Singh Is Bliing that collected Rs 77.6 crore, and Brothers that collected Rs 72.6 crore.
In fact, Airlift that released ahead of the Republic Day holiday has also fared better than Akshay’s previous releases which featured a similar patriotic theme viz Holiday that collected Rs 68.65 cr, Gabbar that collected Rs 59.86 cr, Special 26 that collected Rs 44 cr.
