Following the MNS-Fawad Khan controversy, Karan Johar’s latest film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is slowly building up at the box office and is expected to turn out good numbers in the Diwali extended weekend. Despite Friday being Dhanteras and Diwali knocking on the door, ADHM made a good collection of Rs 13.3 crore at the box office. The month-long controversy witnessed by film director, Karan Johar has either left the film unaffected or has helped it in gaining publicity, as it started with quite happy ticket windows. According to reports in Bollywood Hungama, ADHM made Rs 13.30 Crore nett in India and the gross overseas collection was Rs 21 Crore. With ADHM getting more than a crore rupees collection in North America and the United Kingdom, it is clear that the NRI crowd has been coming into the theatres, as KJo might have expected.
Bollywood analyst Taran Adarsh also shared the day one collections on Twitter. Adarsh wrote, “#ADHM Fri ₹ 13.30 cr. India biz… EXCELLENT at plexes… Note: Dhanteras. Pre-Diwali.” Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Anushka Sharma starrer ADHM, witnessed good occupancy, especially in the morning, shows with it opening with around 35-50 percent occupancy across India. With pre-Diwali and Diwali around the corner, the film is expected to do well at the box office in the festive weekend. Generally, it is seen that the ticket sales increase the day after Diwali, so that might work in the movie’s favour as well. ADHM, expected to get competition from Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, did well in terms of advance booking. ADHM has been doing well in multiplexes. With the Fawad Khan controversy and fresh teaser launches, the film has had a good anticipation and the way people are coming into the theatres, the film is expected to strike gold. Shivaay has a number of single screens for itself in the smaller cities than Ranbir Kapoor starrer ADHM. Shivaay is doing well in northern parts of India as it is Diwali, and also because of the lack of any regional film release. The film is, however, clashing with big movies down south and facing a tough challenge from Tamil films like Kaashmore and Kodi. In Karnataka movies like Santhu and Mukund Murari are giving a touch competition to Shivaay.
Both ADHM and Shivaay have released in approximately 3000 screens each, with ADHM getting more multiples screens and Shivaay getting single screens. ADHM, reportedly made with more than Rs 80 crore, already earned around Rs 50 crore just by selling pre-release rights, IE reported.
