Voting for the second of the seven-phased Assembly elections is underway in 67 constituencies of the western Uttar Pradesh and all the leading political parities have put in high stakes to woo voters in the politically crucial state. Spread over 11 districts of western UP, polling is taking place amid tight security arrangements in places like Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly, Amroha, Pilibhit, Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Badaun. While the ongoing polls are considered to be a litmus test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and its three years long regime, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) is trying its best to retain the lead here. Amidst months of high-decibel campaigns by the leading parties, the state saw ‘blame-game’ at its level best with all political figures blaming their counterparts for the roads not taken for development. The incumbent CM Akhilesh Yadav has blamed PM Modi of fooling people in the name of ‘achhe din’, his party is largely banking upon development agenda with CM’s ‘Kaam Bolta Hai’ campaign. Giving the favour back, PM Modi had been critical about Akhilesh and blamed him for the law and order failure in the state.

In her rallies, the BSP supremo had attacked BJP and SP on the issues of development and demonetisation. Further strengthening her ante against PM Modi, Mayawati has blamed the BJP government for interfering with the personal law of Muslims and ending reservation for backward communities.

Agriculture is the prime issue of concern here as many people rely on farming as their source of income. Real Estate development is anlother big issue that has to be taken care of. Though. people of this constituency are happy over 100 and 108 free ambulance helpline, but think that a lot more can be done.

Who was the winner last time
The ruling SP won this constituency by a massive margin of 22,770 votes during the 2012 Assembly elections. Dharam Raj, the winning SP candidate, bagged a total of 82,343 votes followed by Sangram Singh of BSP who got 59,573 votes. The voter turnout was 64.25 per cent.

Surendra Singh (BSP), Har Govind Singh (BJP), Suresh Yadav (SP) and Brijesh Kumar (RLD).

Why this constituency is important?
Being a reserved scheduled caste constituency, Barabanki is touted to be among one of the strongest regions for SP. Even BSP has good hold in this region. Many people here have seen Mulayam Singh Yadav, Kalyan Singh and Mayawati as CM, but think none of these have ever worked as much as Akhilesh Yadav did. It will be tough for BJP to contest here.
