Voting for the Phase 1 of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2017 is over now and the as country’s populist state went for polling in 73 seats of the western part of UP. Contending parties including Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party in alliance with Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal are eying to grab majority and form government in the state. While the ongoing polls are said to be a mid-term test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government, the SP president Akhilesh Yadav has also left no stones unturned in order to retain his ruling position in the state.
Emerging as a duo of young-leaders, UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and Congress VP Rahul Gandhi have joined forces to take on opposition parties here. As many as 839 candidates, including main contenders from major parties are in fray for the seats in 15 districts of the region where 26,823 polling stations have been set up.
Baghpat constituency of Uttar Pradesh is situated in Baghpat district and comes under the Baghpat Lok Sabha constituency. It is an open constituency.
Number of voters
As per the Election Commission data, this constituency has a total of 2,63,492 registered voters. 1,49,893 out of this are male and 1,13,590 are female voters here.
What are the key issues
Along with other prospective seats in the state, Bhagpat is crucial given the fact that a large number of Muslim as well as Jat voters are there in the constituency. Development is one big issue in this belt and like few other regions of the state, voters are upset with the BJP over its demonetisation decision.
Who was the winner last time
In the 2012 Assembly elections, BSP defeated the RLD by 7,663 votes to win this constituency. Winning BSP candidate Hemlata Chaudhary got 56,957 votes followed by Kawkab Hameed Khan of RLD who got 49,294 votes. The total voter turnout was 62.60 per cent.

Why is this constituency important
Dalits and Gujjars are the other castes having sizeable numbers here. RLD seems to be a clear gainer and is said to win several seats this time.
