Sarojini Nagar, which falls under Uttar Pradesh’s capital district of Lucknow, is one of the crucial constituency in Awadh region. Some TV channels had speculated Akhilesh Yadav of contesting elections from Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow. Akhilesh had later denied rumours saying it to be a “plant by rebel Sharda Pratap Shukla.” Later the party issued a ticket to Akhilesh’s cousin Anurag Yadav. The campaign in the first and second of seven phased Assembly elections has ended for 140 seats of western Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, BSP chief Mayawati and Congress VP Rahul Gandhi have tried all campaigning tools to win the elections.

The Samajwadi Party under Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership is banking upon development agenda, with CM’s ‘Kaam Bolta Hai’ campaign. While PM has urged voters to end the ‘vikas ka vanvas’ (exile of development) and projecting demonetisation as an attack against corruption. Modi and BJP accused SP and BSP of plundering the state over the years and targeted the SP-Congress alliance, saying the two had come together to save themselves.

Joining hands with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav led the SP assault, as party patriarch Mulayam kept away following family feud, with the two scions locking horns with Modi and BSP supremo Mayawati. As per Election Commission of India, Sarojini Nagar has 3,95,623 registered voters. It comprises 2,16,915 male and 1,78,708 female registered voters.

Why it is important

Sarojini Nagar is a part of Uttar Pradesh’s capital city of  Lucknow, which falls district in Awadh region of the state. It comes under the Mohanlalganj Lok Sabha constituency. Sarojini Nagar is an open constituency, while corresponding Lok Sabha constituency Mohanlalganj is reserved for scheduled castes. Some TV channels had speculated Akhilesh Yadav of contesting elections from Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow. In the 2012 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party’s Sharda Pratap Shukla(now fighting on a RLD ticket) won this seat by 8,365 votes. Sharma bagged 67,601 votes. The runner-up was Shiv Shanker Singh of BSP who got 59,236 votes. The electorate was 59.27 %.
