Polling for the third phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017 has started today. The voting today will be crucial for Samajwadi Party and its new president and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Parties are contesting today for 69 seats in and around SP home turf including Itawah, Mainpuri and Kannauj districts. In the 2012 Assembly Elections, Akhilesh had managed to win 55 seats in the region. A pro-SP voting today will play an important role in the return of Akhilesh government. However, this is not going to be easy for the CM who has recently branded himself as a “Vikas Purush” (development man) in the state. There are several reasons for this.

First, the Samajwadi Party’s family feud for power is far from over. Akhilesh himself was seen campaigning against his uncle and SP candidate Shivpal Yadav two days ago. He had asked people in Itawah to teach a lesson to those who tried to betray him. He was referring to Shivpal, without naming him directly. Interestingly, Shivpal is contesting from Jaswantnagar seat that hosts village Saifai — the place of origin of the Yadav clan. It was probably unprecedented in the country when a CM was seen canvassing against his own party candidate. Second, the opposition BJP and BSP have left no stone unturned to break into the Yadav stronghold.

The BJP’s strategy so far has been to rope in non-Yadav voters in the region, while Mayawati has invested her party’s energy in winning the Muslim voters from SP, which recently allied with the Congress.
