On International Women’s Day 2017, female electorates on Wednesday got a surprise treat at a polling booth in Aurai assembly constituency of Bhadohi district as they went to exercise their franchise during the seventh phase of Uttar Pradesh polls 2017. The booth number 394 was decked up with colourful balloons and women voters were offered desserts. It’s unusual for women belong to the villages as they are not familiar with the  concept of celebrating Women’s day. One can certainly hope that initiative like this will only increase the participation of women voters in the ‘festival of democracy’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has this morning hailed “indomitable spirit, determination and dedication” of women-folk on the occasion of International Women’s Day. PM Modi also underlined that the Centre is working towards to promote ‘economic empowerment’, ‘self-reliance’ and ‘social equality’ of women across the country. “Saluting the indomitable spirit, determination & dedication of Nari Shakti on International Women’s Day. GoI’s various initiatives seek to facilitate economic empowerment, self-reliance & social equality as far as Nari Shakti is concerned. Looking forward to addressing a conclave of women Sarpanchs & honouring trailblazers who have worked towards a Swachh Bharat,” PM Modi tweeted this morning.

Celebrated every year on March 8, International Women’s Day was earlier known as the International Working Women’s Day. This day is celebrated as a salute to all the women from every economic and political background for their love, patience and hard work. It was celebrated for the very first time in 1909 as a social event in the city of New York. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’ as given by the United Nations. This theme in itself, empowers women through every sphere of their lives.

President Pranab Mukherjee also had conveyed his greetings on the occasion of International Women’s Day saying generations of Indian women have made an invaluable contribution to the development and progress of the country. “On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I extend warm greetings and best wishes to women in India and in all parts of the world,” he said in a message.
