Jaswantnagar constituency assembly election winner 2017: Mulayam Singh’s brother Shivpal Yadav wins. In the last one month, Uttar Pradesh witnessed high-decibel election campaign and roadshows as all major political parties tried their best to lure voters. While the Assembly polls in the state were touted as a litmus test for the SP government, PM Narendra Modi-led BJP emerged as a strong competitor against the ruling Samajwadi Party. During the campaign, UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav managed to build his image as a ‘leader for youth’ and gained a huge vote bank in several regions of the state. His ‘kaam bolta hai’ campaign also became popular in rural as well as the urban areas. However, there was also a little anger against him because of the law-and-order problems the state. In a three-way contest, Mayawati-led BSP had cemented itself as one of the lead contenders in the state. However, the party was believed to be behind in terms of vote bank apart from some particular communities. Even the votes of Muslim community were supposed to have gone in favour BSP in some pockets.

SP won the constituency by a massive margin of 81,084 votes during the 2012 Assembly elections. Shivpal Singh Yadav of SP bagged a total of 1,33,563 votes followed by

Manish Yadav Patre of BSP, who got 52,479 votes.

Shivpal Singh Yadav (SP), Durvesh Kumar Shakya (BSP), Manish Yadav Patre (BJP) and Jagpal Singh Yadav (RLD).

Why this constituency is important?
The constituency will be a crucial bet for SP as its former state president Shivpal Yadav is contesting the polls. Shivpal seems worried as he suspects sabotage from

inside the party after his conflict with nephew Akhilesh Yadav and cousin MP Ram Gopal Yadav. Shivpal has been emerging victorious in the seat since 1996.
