The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pick to revive the party across India, Amit Shah spoke to the press today and his reaction was as hard as the professional politician could make it sound. He said today, “Election is fought only to be won, there is no middle way.”The BJP chief was speaking as results of this most crucial state were still filtering in with the BJP tally skyrocketing past 300 mark (party was leading in that many seats while Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance was 65 and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party was on 20). Clearly, the BJP was well on way to winning over 2/3rd majority in perhaps the most important state of them all in the country. The credit for this is all PM Modi’s but the hard work done to arrange campaigns and make other preparations for the party and get it ready for elections rested squarely on Amit Shah’s shoulders. And he has delivered. He has brooked no interference while mapping out his strategy, getting it cleared from Modi and thereafter implementing it cleverly and efficiently on the ground in this state that is fractured on basis of caste, community, and region. The result is a magnificent win that even the BJP leaders would never have dreamt possible. In fact, the size of the triumph is eclipsing even the best tally that the exit polls had predicted for the BJP – the highest was by News24, which had forecast a winning seat count of 285 (+/-18) for the BJP.
However, more than anything Shah may have done, what has won the public in Uttar Pradesh over is PM Modi’s promise of development and that too without discrimination. People have voted for economic reform and the ushering in of wealth into the state that it has the potential to achieve but which it has never been able to do because the politicians and successive governments have been corrupt and inefficient or both. Modi has said that he will take the entire populace, not just of the state, but of the entire country along to a future marked by a better lifestyle and a purposeful life and at the same time banish poverty from the land. Expectations sowed are massive, it remains to be seen what kind of a harvest PM Narendra Modi reaps.
