Majitha, which constituency no. 13 in Punjab Vidhan Sabha is a high profile conntituency. Located under  Amritsar lok sabha seat, the constituency is a Majitha community stronghold. SAD’s Sardar Bikram Singh Majithia, who is facing serious allegations of involvement in Punjab’s drug nexus, is MLA from this constituency. AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal has  repeatedly attacked Majithia and even vowed to send him to jail if AAP comes to power. Kejriwal held Majithia responsible for Punjab’s drug menace, and alleged that this SAD leader held Congress’ Amarinder Singh’s backing. Majithia, a senior minister in Punjab’s BJP-SAD government, is also the cousin nephew of Congress’ state unit head Amarinder Singh. Locking horns with Majithia from Congress is Sukhjinder Raj Singh (‘Lalli’ Majitha), while the AAP has pitted  Himmat Singh Shergill.

Bikram is the son of fromer deputy defence minister Satyendra Singh Majithia and brother of union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. He is currently serving as the Revenue Minister in Punjab cabinet and Youth Wing President in party. In 2014, Majithia was summoned by Enforcement Directorate in a Rs 6,000-crore international synthetic drug case, something Kejriwal seemed to have picked up to attack leader.

Kejriwal has alleged that Amarinder Singh, as an opposition leader, has shielded Majitia and that if his party comes to power, expose the nexus between Congress and SAD in Punjab. The Election Comission had to order repolling at 12 polling stations of Majitha Assembly seats due  to technical glitch.

Number of voter in Majitha:

There are 155530 registered voters in Majitha assembly seat. This time EC had established 193 polling stations at 140 different locations across this assembly segment. As per EC, a total number 122609 votes were casted from this Assembly Constituency, the voting percentage is recorded at 78.83%, which is higher than the state average of 77.4%.

Who won last time:

SAD’s Sardar Bikram Singh Majithia was elected MLA from this seat in 2012 Assembly Elections. Majithia won elections by winning with a margin of 47581 votes. Independent Sukhjinder Raj Singh was the trailing candidate.
