BMC election results 2017: Now, Shiv Sena, BJP fight over independent corporators

Shiv Sena increased its total tally in the civic polls to 86 after two independent corporators promised support to the party on Friday at the official residence of Uddhav Thackeray ' Matoshree'.

BMC election results 2017: Shiv Sena increased its total tally in the civic polls to 86 after two independent corporators promised support to the party on Friday at the official residence of Uddhav Thackeray ‘ Matoshree’. The new entrants are Snehal More from Vikhroli and Tulsiram Shinde from Dindoshi. Uddhav Thackeray told the reporters that he has not yet thought of any alliance with any party to wrest the powers in BMC but he has maintained his stand that the post of the Mayor will only be held by Shiv Sena.

After a fierce neck and neck race between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena, BJP was left behind by just 2 seats and then managed to get support of 4 independent corporators yesterday. BJP however, managed to win 8 out of 10 municipal corporations spread across Maharashtra. According to the sources in the party, Thackeray will hold a meeting with senior party members and the newly elected corporators at the Shiv Sena Bhavan on 25 February where the future course of action will be discussed.

In the meantime, both parties are continuing to fight over the independent coproprators. Both have claimed the support of the three remaining corporators. A senior party leader of BJP said that it has got the support of Rahbar Khan and two more independent corporators are willing to extend loyalty to the party. BJP is expected to sit for a committee meeting within a two to three days where the course of the party will be discussed.

Senior party leader of Shiv Sena Manohar Joshi had already given a green signal to the Sena-BJP alliance but he also said that the final call will be taken by Thackeray.

In the BMC counting which took place on 23 February, Shiv Sena won 84 seats followed by BJP who won 82 seats. Congress was relegated to third at 31 seats, whereas NCP and Raj Thackeray-led MNS got 9 and 7 seats respectively.
