Keeping in line with the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry’s decision to search for a new chairman, 10 candidates have been shortlisted by the search- cum- selection committee (SCSC) headed by Dr H.R Nagendera. After a discussion, personal interactions will be held with the shortlisted candidates and a list of three candidates will be forwarded to Union HRD ministry.
The 10 shortlisted candidates include Anil Sahasrabudhe, who is the chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) chief DP Singh, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor G C Tripathi, Delhi Technological University (DTU) vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh, Rayalseema University head Y Narasimhulu and B R Ambedkar University of Social Sciences (Madhya Pradesh) vice-chancellor R S Kureel, as reported by The Indian Express.
The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on 17th May. As per the Union Budget, the new chairman will be responsible for the restructuring of UGC. The recent chairman of the UGC was Prof. Ved Prakash, was appointed on 8 January 2013 with a tenure of 5 years. He retired on 3rd April. A condition was set during his appointment that his tenure will be for five years or till he turns 65, whichever follows earlier. Presently, V C Chauhan is the UGC’s acting head. Chauhan is a UGC member. Besides Nagendra, the selection panel constituted of Lucknow University vice-chancellor D P Singh and former head of Saurashtra University KP Joshipura, as reported by The Indian Express
