On a day when the issue of interconnection with the country’s top three operators was almost resolved, Reliance Jio on Thursday raised the issue of incumbents not allowing number portability of their subscribers, or the facility to change networks by retaining the phone number on its network.
In a letter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), Reliance Jio said the sectoral regulator should take serious cognisance of its complaint and intervene by taking strict action against the incumbents — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular — for alleged violations of the mobile number portability order.
“Considering that this is a clear and deliberate breach of the licence conditions, Trai must direct the IDOs to comply with their licence terms and obligations under the MNP Regulations/TRAI direction, failing which it should recommend cancellation of the respective licences at the earliest,” Reliance Jio said in its communiqueto Trai.
The development assumes significance as it comes on a day when the issue of interconnection was almost resolved with Vodafone India, following suit with Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, agreeing to provide more Points of Interconnection (PoIs) for connecting calls from Reliance Jio users to tier subscribers.
The decision by the top three operators follows a truce reached between the new operator and the incumbents and brokered by the regulator.
