Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy today threatened to take legal recourse if government went ahead with Rafale jet deal with France, saying there were shortcomings in the fighter aircraft.

Swamy, National Executive member of the party, requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to go ahead with the Rafale deal, which was negotiated by the previous UPA government, and said the performance of the French jet “turned out to be worst of all the aircraft” in Libya and Egypt.

Modi is currently in France and will hold comprehensive talks with the French leadership during which the Rafale deal is likely to figure.

“There are two major issues with the Rafale Aircraft deal which would embarrass the BJP government. The first is that Rafale is less fuel efficient aircraft and lacking in essential performance characteristic that no country in the world has agreed to buy these aircraft,” Swamy said in a statement.

“If the Prime Minister for some other ‘compulsion’ decides to go ahead with the deal, I will have no option but to approach the court in PIL to get it set aside,” he said.

The statement further said that some countries have cancelled contract after signing an MoU with Dassault.

“It is a fact that Dassault will go bankrupt if no country buys the Rafale and we want to oblige the French goodwill, it is better to buy Dassault itself rather than their planes as it will be more beneficial,” the leader added.

Rafale was selected by India from among five bidders in 2012 since it was the lowest bidder.

While initially, the deal was expected to be around USD 10 billion, it is now estimated to be over USD 20 billion.

Why is this swamy guy so anti-French, and why is he telling such lies about the Rafale, is he being pa by the Russians to say such unbelievable lies. It is a well know fact that the Rafale has won every contest that it has taken part in. It has beaten, the Eurofighter, the F15,F16,f18, Suhkoi 30 &35 , and it also beat the Swedish Saab, it can carry more armaments than any other jet, it is more manoeuvrable that anything else out there today, and it can track multiple aircraft at the same time without using its radar, by using its optronic system and the other aircraft don't even know they are being attacked! no other jet has this high technology! and it can fly her than any other jet fully armed while using very little fuel compared to any other jet today!

Buying Rafale Jet from France is a strategic decision that rests with expert committee. PM and his entourage understand its impact. Bargaining is a part of business deal that one can hardly shrug off in any bilateral relation. But the threatening tone underscores something which signals someone can undo a process or influence the government’s structured decision taken by expert committee when deal is in discussion stage. It goes beyond decorum. It is true PM, not as a person, has a prerogative and that must not exceed the limit prejudicing to the interest of country. Over enthusiastic people sometimes need to be reticent though India respects freedom of speech.

we must examine new rems and conditions if any are being negotiated critically before coming to any conclusion . loss due to diplomatic relation effect should also be essed as the cost of social effect is estimated for various projects.

There is nothing wrong with the jet fighters, they will just be alright and acceptable once somebody greases Subu's palm and line his and his party's deep pockets. He is gone nuts and sometimes talks off his head. He wants attention, because nobody's give a to him. So he tries to throw some dust to draw public's attention. Just ignore him.

Can you ask Mr Swamy to provide sources for his statements? "said the performance of the French jet turned out to be worst of all the aircraft in Libya and Egypt." & "no country in the world has agreed to buy these aircraft". That will help everybody understand that you have no idea what you are writing about Thanks

It is a defense matter Mr Swami. Better let it be decided by the defense experts. Earlier UPA govt had almost clinched the deal but kickbacks halted them in going ahead with the deal. Let the Indian Force decide what is best for them. I am sure Modi can not go against the wishes of the Air Force Command of the country so better do not poke your nose in all the matters you are not an expert at.

1] PM MODI in his over-enthusiasm to prove that he is international leader, ignoring the serious problems at home(India) and every 2 months goes on foreign tour. At this rate he will be visiting all 228 countries in 5 yrs. India has not gained anything from his previous visits (say China). It is a waste of taxpayers money on foreign tours. 2] Subrahmanya swamy is right and should show guts to take legal action against his own party Govt. 3] many countries have cancelled Rafale deal, as better options are available.

India needs French support for Veto rights UN , permanency in UNSC and nuclear fuels. Subramaniam Pil swamy sees red in everything related to Congress rule. Our PM is simply following his predecessor as a policy matter. Pil swamy is expert in PIL , anti- congressism and communal politics, forget about economics. Sachin swinging his bat to wash dirty linen.
